Mark Smith, who was lucky to survive after being shot in the leg twice in Afghanistan, scooped first place in a top strongman event.

The former Grenadier Guard, 30, was fitted with a metal prosthetic limb and says the sport saved him after his dreadful injuries.

He said: “Bodybuilding has dragged me out of a dark place – I was lost after leaving the Army.

30岁的老兵马克·史密斯曾经在波斯尼亚、伊拉克和阿富汗服过役,他在战争中两次中弹,侥幸生存下来却失去了整条右腿。为了给儿子们树立榜样,他开始健身,并获奖。

“But I didn’t want my two sons to go to school and say their dad used to be a soldier, living in the past.

“I wanted to do something here and now for them to be proud of, I want to be a role model for them so they see me working hard and hopefully that attitude will rub off on them as they get older.”

Mark, of Milton Keynes, has had 25 operations since the shooting in 2011 but has rebuilt his strength with punishing gym sessions and a strict diet, helped by the support of his wife Natalie, 30, and sons Ellis, four, and Ethan, two.

After winning his debut event in Margate, Mark is to compete in the National Physique Committee Phil Heath Classic, a prestigious disabled bodybuilding competition in Houston, Texas.

The soldier, who also served in Bosnia and Iraq, added: “I now train five or six times a week for two to three hours a day and love the challenge of pushing my body as far as I can.”
